The Art of the Schnipp-Schnapp
Storytelling -and creativity in general- often involves holding two ideas at once. Or turning one thing into another, so that one thing becomes two.
Here's one of my favorite examples! The Tomi Ungerer "Schnipp Schnapp" collage.
Living Room Show! Oct 20! Thalia Zedek + Chris Brokaw
Join us for Chris Brokaw and Thalia Zedek's Gainesville stop on their fall living room tour. It's their only Florida show! Formerly of Come, Codeine, Live Skull, Uzi, Lemonheads, and a lot of other projects you'd definitely love, they're also both excellent solo songwriters and this show will be very special.
How to storyboard for Adventure Time and still be a father of three
Derek Ballard came and talked about working for Adventure Time. I love this 45 seconds where he talks about being a parent of three and how it made its way into the final script.
Here's a couple pics.
What I learned from Lynda Barry about stories and flow and avoiding the inner critic!
What I learned from Lynda Barry about stories and flow and avoiding the inner critic!
I was extremely fortunate to take a week-long workshop in person with Lynda Barry back in 2001. A LOONG time ago now!
That workshop, "Writing the Unthinkable" was all about "seeing your story" and following behind it, "like water skiing."

Continuity and Purpose
I've been realizing lately why we tell our stories. It's to take our narrative for ourselves. And especially, to find continuity in our lives.
The best advice I ever got.
I was in the studio of cartoonist Brian Sendelbach in 1993, fretting about my latest mini-comic, when he stopped me and gave me the best piece of advice anybody has ever given me.
The best rejection letter I ever got...
The best rejection letter I ever got came from an editor who was hiring all my friends for a hip anthology in the 90s. I had made a somewhat popular 50-page comic at this point, and thought anyone should hire me.
What did MAUS and CALVIN look like early on?
A lot of people spend SO MUCH TIME DESIGNING THEIR CHARACTERS and worrying about everything looking PERFECT- but maybe it doesn’t matter at all!
Can TRUTH and CRAFT co-exist?
James Kochalka said he’d rather see an intense, raw, scrawled story than someone aping other people’s techniques. I tend to agree- but I also know every time I personally strive for more.
Tom Hart interviewed on Your Creative Push
In this interview, I discuss a little of my artistic educational journey, how I was able to continue working on comics through my initial artistic shortcomings.
