From Story to Pitch: 4 Weekly Zoom Talks with Rob Clough

Week 1: The 3 narrative questions in building a story. It emphasizes character and motivation as the most important elements and offers advice on how to structure it with regard to plot and world-building. This will be especially useful for those who are too focused on plot/world-building.

Week 2: Memoir is a Genre. Lecture and implications. Exploring concepts of honesty/truth, the difference between story and anecdote, and types of memoir strategies. Aimed at those who want to tell personal stories but don't quite have a grasp on how.

Week 3: Tips and ideas on how to get back to the drawing board. Extensive talk about the dos and don'ts of diary comics, Lynda Barry's theories, reading and tracing other comics, etc. The balancing between intentionality vs intuition here, and then the comics as stage magic metaphor.

Week 4: How to write a pitch, from the perspective of an editor and publisher. It's not just a series of instructions, but ties in concepts from the first lecture to distill the essence of your narrative in a way that's not only easy to understand, but is easy to write. Most artists have a REALLY hard time talking about their own work, and I have strategies on how to make this easier.
