Abstract comics and lyric connections

One of my favorite things to do in class is make abstract comics with emotional content. Or at least try.

We do this individually and as a group. The first thing we did is Ray Bradbury’s 100 nouns list, and then we wrote out some of our favorite lyrics and poem lines, and put them in a hat. We made an abstract cover, used a noun from our list as a title, and pulled a lyric to incorporate somewhere in the book. That was book 1.

Book 2 was collaborative. Starting with an abstract page 1, we passed it around, making sure everyone added another lyric, until the books were finished. We took the books back that we started, added a cover and used TWO nouns from our list as a title.

Today’s group of 6 who braved the non-hurricane conditions (as it stalls over the Bahamas - be safe, y’all!) to come to class made these great books below.

All of the second round’s titles are terrific on their own count: “The Fatalist and the Floral Pattern”, “Sounds Kept in the Shed”, “The Cornfield and the Sheet Music” (!), “Angry Text/Roadtrip”, “The Future and the Heavy Boxes”, and “Egg of the Jetty”.

I would buy any of these comics sight unseen!!
